Classification Activity

Welcome to an inside look at our classification unit.  The free classification activity is below. It is one of my favorite.

In the free classification activity below, students have to classify 27 different organisms using a dichotomous key. In this dichotomous key, students are determining the kingdom, phylum and class for each organism.

One reason I really like this activity is that it immerses students into content vocabulary that students have to know and USE. The following terms are just a few examples:

  • autotroph
  • heterotroph
  • prokaryote
  • eukaryote
  • unicellular multicellular
  • nucleus
  • decomposer
  • chitin
  • cell wall
  • angiosperm
  • gymnosperm

This activity also generates a ton of discussion about the organisms. Students really get into this activity and generate really good questions that they can then research.

I hope you love it. Below you will see the layout of how our units are organized. You can gain access to the members only content instantly here.
